Good Shepherd Church

About Us

Our History and Background

The Parish of Good Shepherd had its humble beginnings at the Parish of St Luke, Salt River. The pioneer and founder was the Revd Joseph Taylor, rector of the above parish at the time. Through his efforts ground was granted at the south end of the Maitland Commonage and entrusted to the Board of Trustees of the Diocese of Cape Town on the 26th July 1897.

The ground is still in existence on the corner of Royal and Koeberg Roads. The first church was a wood and iron structure and on the 20th December 1901, the Ecclesiastical District of Maitland requested and was granted a 2nd loan of £600 by the Provincial Board of Trustees. This was to erect a large Mission School Chapel. This was our first stone church. This church was completed but never consecrated. Services were conducted in Dutch and English. It served as both church and school.
In 1921 it was photographed and these photos, Revd Johnson handed to parishioners as farewell and Christmas card gifts.

This building was later sold to William Rees, a member of the Provincial Board of Trustees on the 11th February 1930 and on the 23rd December 1936 was transferred to the Apostolic Faith Mission, ex his estate.

The second stone church was built on the corner of Voortrekker Road and 2nd Avenue, Maitland. This was similar in style but much larger. The Right Revd William Marlborough Carter laid the foundation stone on 26th July 1926. This church building was deconsecrated in July 1972. The foundation stone of the third church, which is the present building was laid on 30th July 1972 and consecrated on 7th October 1972 by Archbishop Robert Selby-Taylor.
